Renamed in 2022 in honor of Vicha Ratanapakdee, who was killed in an apparently random racially-motivated attack while on a walk nearby in 2021.

The stairway was originally named Sonora Lane, and was built in the late 1940s or early 1950s when the Anza Vista neighborhood was developed on the former site of the Calvary Cemetery.
