The current stairway was built in the 1960s, at the same time as the adjacent apartment building at 400 Monterey, which has an entrance on the stairs. There previously had been a wooden stairway at the base of the hill along Monterey.

Both blocks of the Detroit steps are now cared for by the Detroit Steps Project, a part of the Sunnyside Neighborhood Association.
