Rebuilt in the 1990s after suffering from severe storm damage.
The original steps were built some time after 1909, probably as part of the Ashbury Park Tract subdivision, which comprised all of the residential lots between Pemberton Place, Clayton Street, and Twin Peaks Boulevard. The retaining wall of the original steps had small waiting shelter built in to it for the 33-line streetcar on Clayton Street (Now the 33 Ashbury & 18th Muni line.)
