Built into the retaining wall going up to Market Street. This retaining wall was constructed when the Twin Peaks Tunnel was built and then Market Street was extended past Castro Street shortly afterwards. Originally, Ord Street went straight through between 17th and 18th Streets.

There used to be a mural of a rainbow painted on the wall at the bottom of the stairs. Celestial bodies were added to it in 2009 or 2010, and then the whole mural was painted over some time after 2017.
