A short wooden stairway directly at the top of the stairway up 27th Street from Castro. This stairway connects to an unpaved driveway providing access to the two homes on this block of Castro, which in turn connects to a trail through the Duncan & Castro Open Space to Duncan Street. More interesting than the stairs themselves are the numerous whimsical metalwork statues in front of 1913 Castro Street, just south of the stairs.
The steepness of this hill made this the last corner of Noe Valley to be developed; some of the nearby lots were undeveloped until as late as the 1990s. Newburg Street was built in the 1940s to bypass the hill by diagonally splitting off from Castro Street.
Before 27th Street was graded east of Castro in the 1960s, there was a longer stairway in this location that went all the way down to the north side of the right-of-way of 27th Street.
