The 22nd Street Jungle Stairs project was started in 2012 to beautify the stairs by maintaining and landscaping the gardens around the steps, including the planting of native vegetation. The "main" Jungle Stairs are the stairs between Diamond and Collingwood, and this stairway is known as Jungle Stairs East.
The stairs were originally built circa 1923, when the retaining wall in the intersection was built and the streets were graded. There previously had been a wooden stairway up to Collingwood Street.
